BLAST!
From 2006 until 2009 I works with filmmaker Paul Devlin on BLAST!, a documentary that follows a team of cosmologists as they build and then launch a 10-ton telescope from a 40-story balloon in the Arctic and Antarctic circles. Their adventure takes them from Arctic Sweden to Inuit polar bear country in Canada, where catastrophic failure forces the team to try all over again on the desolate ice in Antarctica.
BLAST! is about the crazy lives of scientists. Their professional obsessions, personal and family sacrifices, and philosophical and religious questioning all give emotional resonance to a spectacular and suspenseful story of space exploration.

What people are saying about BLAST!
“In a rare combination of content and storytelling, BLAST! treats the viewer not only to the fruits of cosmic discovery but to the fits and starts of dedicated scientists who navigate paths of research that enable it.” – Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist, American Museum of Natural History and Host of PBS NOVA science NOW
“BLAST! was about an interesting subject which immediately got me hooked. There wasn’t a single point during the movie in which I wished I was doing something else, which is how I usually feel about science movies. Kids should really be able to watch this in schools, it’s important.” – Claudia Dimick, age 16
“BLAST! helps you see first-hand just how difficult, amazing and rewarding these kinds of scientific efforts can be. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll walk away astounded that people can actually send a telescope to the edge of space and forever change how we see and think about about the universe.” – Discovery SpaceBLAST!
